2010 Gossett Staff Party at Nick's Riverside Grill

The Gossett Staff including coaches, GAs, Interns, Trainers, Assistants, Academic Support, etc., enjoyed a lovely evening at the Washington Harbor hosted by Nick Cibel of Nick's Riverside Grill. The food and the fellowship were wonderful! The highlight of the evening was a "quiz" given by the GAs to the guests. They had collected notable (funny) quotes from the various meetings and the those present had to take the quiz to guess who said them. The winner was Jemal Griffin and the quote most loved by the group was the one by David Sollazzo in reference to a recuiting trip in Florida - "There was an alligator in the street. No kidding. I swear it was a dinosaur - at least five feet off the ground!!!" A couple of others: "He has 13 offers, but only 17 are legit" and "You're gonna have to decide this summer, you want to get tattoos or do you want to eat?!?" It was a very good time!!

MGN Sponsor Dinner

As you know the MGN is truly the backbone of support for the Terps Football program. We are very appreciative of all our members and thank them for their support. Another group of people who help out significantly are our sponsors. We recently enjoyed a sponsor dinner at the home of Dr. Erik and Joyce Young. Good friends, good food and good times...

Football Players work with Campers

Several of our players are spending time with campers during a summer class experience. I was able to capture some shots at the pool. So many of the campers just love being with the ball players. Activities include swimming, games, and computer time. The camp is run by Dr. Elizabeth Brown.

MGN Auction Item - Dinner with Colin and Gloria

In the past four years, Colin Potts and Gloria Friedgen have offered a gourmet dinner paired with select wines to the highest bidder. At our last Gala, Barry Gossett and John Alahouzas were bidding back and forth for the dinner and to make everyone happy (including the MGN!) we sold it to both gentlemen. Each would bring a guest couple to dine with Ralph and I, Don Brown, and James and Fumi Franklin. So yesterday we enjoyed a delicious dinner starting with a traditional Italian Antipasto Misto, then moving on to dinner:
First Course
Maryland Lump Crab Cake with Grilled Zucchini served with Remoulade
with Provenance Vineyards Napa Valley 2008 Sauvignon Blanc
Second Course
Stuffed Eggland served with Manicotti and Tomato Sauce
with COS Frappato 2007 - Sicilia
Third Course
Classic Osso Bucco with Creamy Fontin and Mascarpone Polenta
with Cantine Martinelli Sagrantino di Montefalco Sor Anna 2003 Umbria
Fourth Course
Milk Chocolate Creme Brulee with Fres Raspberries
with Poggio Salvi 2000 Vin Santo del Chianti-Siena
Coffee

Believe it or not, football was not on the table. Conversation was light and enjoyable and everyone had a great time!
Thanks to John and Barry for thinking this was a valuable auction item!
Buon appetit!

MGN Gold Cocktail Party - May 7th

The change in venue didn't dampen the enthusiasm of the folks who attended the 10th MGN Gold Cocktail Party. It was a beautiful evening, unlike the cold, rainy weather in the previous years - change of venue proved good for that!
We mixed and mingled, had some good times with some of our very loyal supporters and for that we are always grateful.
Enjoy the photos taken by Dale Helmer Jr., father of John Helmer, football letterman (whose father/grandfather, coincidentally is Dale Helmer Sr, who was substitute taught for me in La Jolla, CA, when we were with the Chargers!)

Former Terp, Current Minnesota Vikings DB, Madieu Williams, On a Goodwill Mission

Madieu Williams continues to make us proud!!! He and a cohort from the School of Public Health are in Freetown, Sierra Leone, Madieu's hometown, and where Madieu has established a school in honor of his mother, Abigail Burscher. You can see Madieu, back row, second from the left, with the school administration and members of the travel party. Here is an excerpt from the journal of Dr. Woodie Kessel, pediatrician, (front row, second from the left) about the school visit.

It took 2.5 to 3 hours to get to Madieu’s school. Most of the travel was paved potholed roads except for the last half hour of rough unpaved rocky road. We drove by some very poor housing albeit with space between the homes unlike in most other parts of Freetown. Since everything here is so poor it is hard todistinguish from poor, real poor, and unbelievably poor. We arrived at Madieu’s school and we were as you might expect VERY warmly received, especially Madieu. We met the Head Master, school staff, and the teachers and peaked into each of three classrooms. In classroom 1 the lesson was a secular version of “In the Beginning” – on day 1 G-d created light…; in class room 2 the lesson was addition and subtraction; and in class room 3 it was multiplication. Class 2 and 3 welcomed us with songs and dancing. We then went to the Headmaster’s office for the Friendship agreement signing and instruction of bracelet crafting. Madieu and I spoke briefly and took many photos. We presented them ALL with hats from Bob and the UMD SoPH thanks to Gloria (and the SPH Alumni Association).
